Why we should change formation
|
We know Pellegrini only plays one system and he won’t change but in today’s game there are a lot of advantages in mixing things up. Lampard completely out smarted José with his change in formation to what he was expecting and by the time he did change things it was to late. I know we don’t have as good players but that is just one example of shaking things up and making things difficult for the opposition. Teams can safely prepare when playing us and know exactly how to play and hurt us.
The annoying thing is we do have the players to switch systems. If Cresswell is out with an injury for example playing 3 at the back would make sense as Arthur is useless as a full back but him and Fredericks would be much effective in a five midfield. It would also not weaken us in midfield and we could effectively play Haller and Antonio as a front 2.
Pointless post in a way but a reason I think to still keep looking for a replacement for the future.

I think the formation we play is a bit irrelevant as we change that throughout the game. That is to say I see when we defend we often have a back line of 6 and then 2 or 3 in front of them like this: Snodgrass Fredericks Balbuena Ogbonna Cresswell Fornals Noble Rice
I think the argument is more what players we want to make different areas weaker or stronger.
Therefore, some are arguing we should have 5 defenders on the pitch which obviously weakens midfield or attack. Have to say I prefer 4 defenders.
Players that are excellent in two positions help a lot as then we can have say a good defender and midfielder depending on what we are doing. However, also these double players need the ability to read the game and understand where they are needed and not get caught out being a midfielder or attacker when they need to be defending. Speed and understanding is critical today.
Anyway, I think Pellegrini understands this very well and he aims to have a balance, but always be strong in attack. I like that, but understand a few of you are tired of that and want to tilt the balance to defense at the expense of attack.
Another pointless post!? Aren’t they all or none? Who cares, Merry Christmas

2 up top ideally Haller and Antonio.
Play aggressive offensively, get 3 fwd like the Mickies do.
Run and pass the ball forward to players running into space.

Three at the back is shit, negative and a Moyes-esque move.
A desperation move. We're not there yet. Sack the manager, get a couple a players in January and we're ok.
Relax you cunts.

We should go for the jugular. They are very short defensively, and so t score many goals. If we score 2 we should win.

Kouyate might be playing at the back for them, they’ve got Cahill and Sako out.

id like to see a back three of Diop/Balbuena/Oggy, Fredericks & Arthur/Cresswell the wingbacks, Rice the one holding midfielder, two of Noble/Fornals/Lanzin/Anderson/Snodgrass ahead of Rice and Antonio/Haller up top. the biggest problem is there is very little cover at CB, DM or ST so it will never be seen under the current manager,

He has changed formation recently. He played 2 up top at Southampton.

If we were to do that some of our forward players might want to watch Willian play in that game. Exceptional going forward and worked his arse off going back. Have always thought he was an excellent player and Lampards move to leave him and Kante out against us was a master stroke. Cheers Fatty

Absolutely. Particularly in our position we need to outsmart the better sides.
That said, I think in whichever shape we use under Pellegrini I think he will always favour his principles. Solidity has to come from the approach the manager instills in his players. Our manager doesn't have a solid approach, and I doubt a change of shape can alter that.
